Rochdale Bus Shelters To Go Green

No, GMPTE aren't changing from the rather sleek grey look of their recent bus shelters (outside Withington Library, for example) to garish green.  Instead it looks like new bus shelters in Rochdale are to be solar powered.  Now, we all thought the 21st century would see flying cars and personalised jet-packs for getting from place-to-place.  Since they're still to arrive I suppose that solar powered bus shelters are at least a step in the right direction.

Quoted in yesterday's Manchester Evening News, Councillor Allen Brett said “Solar-powered bus shelters might sound like an odd idea for an area of the country where it rains a lot, but they don’t need direct sunlight to be effective.

“It is very important that there is good lighting at shelters as it helps people feel safe while they wait for their bus.

“Solar-powered systems are ideal for those sites which can’t easily be connected to mains electricity.”

A forward-thinking scheme there, and one well worth duplicating elsewhere in the region.
